Come join Munnell Run Farm as we welcome our newest instructor to the guest artisan series, Brandon Cowie. With a degree in fine arts from Edinboro and a lifelong interest in the arts, Brandon has a passion for art and his classes are full of creativity and fun! All materials will be provided.

Seasonal: Children's Summer Gardening Series

General Description:

This summer series is designed to introduce children to the importance of gardening, with a special focus on vegetable gardening. The participants will get the opportunity to watch the Munnell Run Farm Heirloom Vegetable Garden grow. They will learn the value of hard work and the satisfaction of growing one’s own food. Each week they will get to work in the garden and watch it grow while learning a new topic of interest related to
agriculture. They will have the unique opportunity to visit a local farm that focuses on vegetable gardening as well as a wide array of other agricultural opportunities. The series will end with a picnic celebration, showcasing some of the vegetables the children helped grow.

Age for Series: 6 to 8 year olds

Fee for the Series: $5/ program

$20/ 5 programs *Must pre-register for entire series to get discounted price

*includes: local farm field trip, series picnic, series materials, hand-outs, and crafts

 

To Bring: Clothes you are not afraid to get dirty, boots, garden gloves, snack, water

Seasonal: Youth Archery Camp
Tuesday, June 19, 2018 - Friday, June 22, 2018
Time: 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM

Join the staff of the Mercer County Conservation District for its eighth annual youth archery camp. This 4 day camp is designed to teach children ages 9 to 14 the basics of handling and shooting archery equipment.  The fee for the program is $65.

• Note: All bow equipment will be provided. We ask that during competition, students use the equipment we have to make the competition equal across the board. The students may bring their own bows on Wednesday- Friday and the use of those bows may occur during the practice sessions at the discretion of the instructors.
Camp Highlights
~Tuesday, June 19th(9:00 AM to noon) Bow Basics/ Bow Safety
*The camp will begin with a history of archery and its significance through history. The students will then learn about the major components of the bow. They will also be introduced to the tools that are included in archery such as the release and arrow. The students will learn about the proper precautions and safety requirements to be followed when handling a bow.
 
~Wednesday, June 20th (9: 00 AM to noon) Bow Handling/ Shooting Practice
* The students will be provided with Munnell Run Farm’s bows and arrows. The basics of shooting will be discussed and shooting practice will begin. The students will learn about scoring paper vs 3D targets. An individual paper competition will end this segment of the camp.
* Participants will also learn about the role that archery plays into conservation. They will also learn about many of the different animals in the PA woods.
 
~Thursday, June 21st (9:00 AM to 1:00 PM) Western Reserve Visit
* Note: Transportation is provided on this day.
* The participants will spend some time reviewing how to shoot and getting practice in. A group paper animal competition will occur.
* Lunch will be provided for all participants and an awards assembly will follow at the conclusion of the camp. The district will provide the main dish as well as drinks, plates, and napkins, etc. We ask that all participants bring a side dish.
 
~ Friday, June 22nd (10 AM to Noon) Gold-N-Grain Visit
* Note: Camp will start at the shop.
* Students will have the opportunity to go to an actual archery shop to see what they have to offer beginners. They will learn about the leagues, JOAD, etc that give them opportunities to link in. They will have opportunity to shoot an indoor paper competition.
 
 
 
 
Seasonal: Miniature Gardening and Landscaping

Come join our newest artisan, Sherry Warner, as she guides you step-by-step on how to develop and create your very own miniature garden.  She will cover: containers, types of plants to use in them, where to get inspiration, how to pick a theme (including figurines), and how to do hard and soft landscaping. 
 
All materials will be provided.  You will leave with a 12 in container, 1 large figurine, 5 smaller figurines, 3 plants, as well as additional landscaping materials.  She will have a wide variety of figurines for you to select and find inspiration.

Seasonal: Watershed Explorer's Adventure Camp
Wednesday, July 25, 2018 - Friday, July 27, 2018
Time: 9 AM to 3 PM
Dates: July 25th through the 27th

·    Ages: 10-15 years old

·    Cost: $125

o    This includes: water testing materials, lab equipment, camp hand-outs, graduation picnic supplies, commemorative t-shirt, transportation to off-site camp awards

 

·    Registration Deadline: Monday, July 2nd

Camp Highlights
NOTE: ALL DAYS WILL BEGIN AND END AT MUNNELL RUN FARM IN MERCER, PA. DROP OFFS AND PICK-UPS WILL OCCUR.
*Wednesday, July 25th (9:00 AM to 3:00 PM) Watersheds 101, PBC’s of Water Testing
Will be held off-site at Maurice K. Goddard State Park (Launch 1)
~Students will learn the: basics of watersheds, watershed mapping, role of plants in a watershed, water quality assessments 101, and in-stream macroinvertebrate assessment. Special emphasis will put on the importance of plants in a watershed.
~Note: Bring a lunch, book bag, snacks, 2 bottles of water, bug spray, sunblock, water boots/ shoes
~Wear long pants
*Thursday, July 26th (9:00 AM to 3:00 PM) Forest Ecology 101, Plant ID 101, Hiking
Will be held off-site at Maurice K. Goddard State Park (Launch 2)
~Students will learn about forest ecology on an interactive hike with DCNR Forester Dave Cole. They will learn about basic tree ID and the role of forests in a watershed on this 2 ½ mile hike.
~Note: Bring a lunch, book bag, sack lunch, snacks, 2 bottles of water, bug spray, sunblock, long sleeve shirt
~Wear long pants and hiking boots
*Friday, July 27th (8:00 AM to 2:00 PM) Water Safety and Kayaking 101, Lake Ecology
Will be held off-site at Maurice K. Goddard State Park (Launch 3)
~Students will: learn how stream health and lake health are related, lake ecology 101, water safety 101, and kayaking 101.
~The camp will concluded with lunch at Munnell Run Farm and a camp graduation ceremony. The graduation ceremony will take place at 1:30 PM and parents are encouraged to attend.
~Note: Bring a book bag, snacks, 2 bottles of water, sunblock, sun glasses, water shoes, an extra set of clothes.
~Wear clothes for kayaking

 

**We ask that parents fill out a permission slip and send it in with the payment for the camp. If your child is interested, please pre-register by Monday, July 2nd by calling us at: (724) 662-2242. Space is limited, so please pre-register.
