What: We’ll be learning about the FrogWatch USAtm program from Chris Davis from the University of Pittsburgh’s Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology and then checking out Munnell Run Farm’s vernal pools. FrogWatch USAtm is a nationwide citizen-scientist program where volunteers help monitor frog and toad populations by recording and reporting information on their calling activity. Training will be provided on how to identify the various calls of our local frog and toad species, how to identify a good wetland to monitor, and how to record and enter your data into the FrogWatch USAtm online database. This is a two-part program – please come to both and dress for the weather!

Who: Anyone with an interest in helping protect our native wildlife!! No experience is necessary. Open to all ages - could be a fun homeschool or scout activity! All children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult and all participants must be registered.

Please RSVP to Larissa at MCCD by April 18th by calling (724-662-2242) or emailing lcassano@mcc.co.mercer.pa.us

Once trained, a FrogWatch USAtm volunteer will monitor a wetland of their choice for calling as often as they are willing, ideally twice a week during the frog breeding season (March-August). The data that is collected is made available to both the public and scientists and is used to track changes in species distribution.
