Munnell Run Farm offers field learning experiences (FLEs) for pre-school through sixth grade students (programs for middle school through college-level students are also available by request.) Activities for all students are hands-on, outdoor-oriented, and grade-level appropriate. Lessons were developed specifically to address PA Chapter 4 Academic Standards.
Each of our program “menus” is designed to allow you to choose lessons that meet your specific academic needs within the time frame of your visit to Munnell Run Farm. Adapted versions of many of the programs can also be offered off-site at your location.
Before visiting, please look over our guidelines for field learning experiences to help assure that you and your students have a great experience at Munnell Run Farm.

Adult Programs: Munnell Run Farm periodically offers classes, lectures, and workshops for general adult audiences. Past topics covered include woodlot management, organic gardening, pasture management, rain gardening, composting, container gardening, and gardening for good health. Please check our calendar of events for upcoming programs.
Envirothon! The Envirothon is a fun, environmental learning competition for teams of up to 5 students in grades 9 through 12. Students answer questions at five stations to test their knowledge of wildlife, forestry, soils, aquatic environments, and current environmental issues. Our local competition is held jointly with the Crawford County Conservation District in May of each year at Pymatuning State Park, and the winning team goes on to the state competition. The state winner proceeds to the national event. Students study after school, with a teacher acting as the team advisor. A materials list and study materials are provided. A school may have more than one team entered into the competition. Interested teachers or students may learn more about the Envirothon by visiting www.envirothonpa.org
“Farm to You” Teaching Trunks: Six totally self-contained teaching trunks with lesson plans are available for loan to teachers on the following topics: poultry and eggs, grains, integrated pest management, dairy, fiber production, and farming in Pennsylvania. Please contact us at 724-662-2242 for more information or to schedule the use of a trunk.
College Internships: Over the years, MCCD has provided internships for many college students in a wide variety of disciplines. Interested applicants should contact the Conservation District office at 724-662-2242.
Pymatuning-Shenango Watershed Challenge: The Pymatuning/Shenango Watershed Challenge is an environmental education competition held annually at Munnell Run Farm for students in grades 6-8. The idea is simple – the event combines the concepts of hands-on education with the exhilaration of a good competition and the fun of spending a day in the great outdoors. Students, scout groups, 4-H clubs, and home school groups located within the Shenango River Watershed (Mercer, Crawford and Lawrence Counties in PA and Ashtabula and Trumbull County in OH) are eligible to enter up to two teams of 3 to 5 students. Participants are tested on their knowledge of natural resources in the following categories: Aquatics, Forestry, Soils, Watersheds and Wildlife. Contest rules, reference materials, registration forms, and prizes will be provided by the Penn Ohio Watershed Association and its partners. For more information, contact Amy Reeher at 330-637-2056, ext. 111 or at reehera@embarqmail.com or call MCCD at 724-662-2242.
