FROM THE FARM TO YOU

Topic(s): Agriculture, food and fiber production
Time Required: 1 hour 30 minutes
Description: Students will: 1) determine the origins of foods and fibers they use every day, 2) differentiate between “raw” and “processed” foods, 3) list the steps of a food or fiber item from production to consumption, 4) convert a raw food (cream) into a processed food (butter), 5) tour Munnell Run Farm via our handicap-accessible farm wagon to observe the plants and animals we grow, and 6) meet a live farm animal and learn about its particular adaptations.
Fee: $1.50 per student
Suggestions: Wear older clothes and shoes or boots. The farm can be muddy at times.

STORIES IN THE SOIL
|
Topic(s): Soil, soil formation, properties of soil, soil organisms
Time Required: 1 hour 30 minutes
Description: Students will: 1) determine how much of the Earth’s surface is arable, 2) identify the components of soil, 3) discuss the concepts of cycles, 4) create a soil profile, 5) compare and contrast different soil types, 6) explain the importance of particle sizes in different soil types.
Fee: $1.50 per student

WATERSHED WISDOM
|
Topic(s): Water cycle, watersheds, point and non-point source pollution, surface water, ground water
Time Required: 1 hour 30 minutes
Description: Students will: 1) participate in a “water cycle relay race,” 2) observe a model watershed demonstration, 3) participate in a biological stream sampling to view and identify macro-invertebrates, and 4) “invent” an aquatic animal.
Standards: Watersheds and Wetlands 4.1.7 A, B, C
Fee: $1.50 per student
Suggestions: Make sure students wear weather-appropriate, layered clothing and waterproof footwear.

WISE ABOUT WETLANDS
|
Topic(s): Wetlands, adaptations, wetland soils and plants, wetland animal species
Time Required: 1 hour 30 minutes
Description: Students will: 1) compare upland and wetland soils, 2) determine the function of wetlands by competing in a “scavenger hunt” in our riparian wetland, 3) observe plants and animals that live in wetlands and, 4) list adaptations of aquatic plants and animals.
Fee: $1.50 per student
Suggestions: Make sure students wear weather-appropriate, layered clothing and waterproof footwear and/or bring a change of shoes.
